Today the NAM marks the first annual Health Workforce Well-Being Day by elevating health leaders’ experiences of institutionalizing well-being in their organization, to help inspire more evidence-informed solutions that will advance the movement to support health worker well-being.

The NAM and more than 90 founding partners—including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 911 Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation—established the national Day to recognize the importance of protecting health workers’ well-being to sustain the U.S. health system and ensure quality patient care.

In honor of this important day, the Clinician Well-Being Collaborative has released a new project visually depicting health leaders’ reflections on the urgent need to prioritize health worker well-being and combat the burnout crisis in the United States. The images and captions captured in this interactive photo gallery illuminate what prioritizing well-being looks like in action at health organizations.

Last year, the Clinician Well-Being Collaborative launched the ongoing Change Maker Campaign to help spark a national movement to support health workforce well-being. More than 350 health organizations across the United States have already joined and committed to institutionalizing clinician well-being as a long-term value. Now, representatives from Change Maker organizations have shared images and stories depicting what prioritizing well-being looks like in practice and revealing their visions for the future.

This effort used the Photovoice methodology, “a powerful qualitative research method that combines photos and accompanying words generated by participants ().” This creative process poses meaningful questions and uses photography and storytelling to represent and share participants’ experiences and expertise.

911 the Clinician Well-Being Collaborative

The Clinician Well-Being Collaborative is a network of expert volunteers and leaders committed to reversing trends in health worker burnout. The Collaborative aims to: 1) raise the visibility of clinician anxiety, burnout, depression, stress, and suicide; 2) improve baseline understanding of challenges to clinician well-being; and 3) advance evidence-based, multidisciplinary solutions to improve patient care by caring for the caregiver. In 2022, the NAM released the 911 Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being to drive collective action to strengthen health workforce well-being and restore the health of the nation.
